Inspired Real Estate For Today

Why I Am Not Your Mother, Father, Instructor, Doctor or Therapist...

Lola AuduAdmittedly, it's taken me awhile to understand certain things. I'm of the generation of real estate agents who straddle the rapidly expanding divide between the "old school" and the "new school."  My generation was hooked to the pager.  Early in my career, I had a broker who demanded you answer it within 7 minutes or else the lead was gone. Poof! Given to someone else just like that.  When I left, it took me 3 months to debrief from the trauma of that aspect of my experience.

What I learned from that debacle is this:  No one will DIE if I don't answer my phone calls during dinner, at midnight when some callers choose to call for real estate related advise or if I turn OFF my phone during a meeting with someone who deserves my attention at the moment.  I am not anyone's doctor.  The decisions and counsel my job requires are important, but certainly not life threatening.  Nor does my job require me to talk with a client every single day or several times a day to allay fears and superstitions.  That is the job of a licensed therapist.

The Mother/Father complex has been a little trickier because the Mother role is one I play in real life.  Thus, the transference of this role into client relationships has sometimes occurred inadvertently.  As a broker, it becomes even more critical not to confuse the fact that you are a manager of agents, not their pseudo parent.  I am learning that caring compassion for the concerns of others is not the same as parenting them.  That job can only belong to the individuals who raised them...I am a poor substitute.

I am a real estate specialist. I am hired to share my knowledge and expertise about the real estate transaction and to guide clients through to a successful conclusion.  I am a Partner in the Process with my clients...someone who engages by sharing my understanding of the unique challenges that my clients face and who LISTENS to what they have to say.  My role is not to instruct you in what is best for you, but rather to give you the benefit of my wisdom and experience so that you can make an intelligent and informed choice.  I am a Realtor®.

Lola,

Is there a twelve step program for that??? LOL Thanks,   Fran

Fran...LOL...I probably could have used at least 2 twelve step programs to come to a place of clarity regarding some of these inappropriate roles that I have tried to play through the years.  Ah...the bliss of "recovery." :)

Lola - And my educated guess is you are a damn darn good excellent one!

Cute post Lola,  and I'm at a point where some of my buyers are turning into the kids I forgot to have.  And I've had a few I clients that I had to remind that I wasn't licensed as a therapist, unless you count house therapist.  I think we're the first to know when a buyer's relationship is in trouble.
Posted by Patricia Kennedy (Evers & Company Realtors) about 4 years ago
Funny how some think I am all that.... I've had to tell clients that I can listen but I will not utter a comment when they're venting about their spouse...okay..that was just once. And never again!

Lola- So that's what a Broker is LOL I was wondering there for awhile what my role was..........not really, I told them last year I am not their babysitter, it didn't even dawn on me to take over a parenting role :)  Anyway, I liked this.....thank you, and I promise not to call you when your phone is off, if you promise not to call when mine is :)

You mean I don't call you if I blew out my knee playing ball? Or if the painter showed up two hours late? Locked out of my home you sold me last year?

Amen!  Amen!

What else is there to say?  You just said it all.  And very eloquently, I might add.  :)

I have been people's Dear Abby, Ann Landers, Sister Mary Lemme Hear It, for 22 years.  It's part of the world of sales, and if people like you, they will share their hearts with you.  Sometimes it's wearing, but it goes with the territory I guess...

Thanks Jason.  I try my best.  Sometimes, just being a Realtor® takes the energy required for several jobs!

Lola,

I had all but forgotten about those pagers.  Fortunately, I never succumbed to owning one.

Sally...Venting about spouses or past real estate agents is territory that's best avoided.  I've learned to bring those conversations to a quick end because people who freely vent about others almost always will invariably vent about me.

Kathy...I used to put my phone on vibrate...now, I just turn the thing OFF!  People appreciate attention...I just tell clients that when I'm giving other people attention, I will not be available by phone.

Hi Jackie...it's one thing to be a caring and compassionate person and to demonstrate this within the course of a transaction.  But, crossing the line is unhealthy and inappropriate.  My doctor does not try to sell real estate....I should not attempt to do his job either.  I don't think it's a part of the license or the territory.

Lola - from a fellow Michigander - thanks for the insights.  You've obviously achieved balance in your life, which will greatly benefit your clients (although they may not recognize it right away).

I sure hope you had a beautiful early-spring day in Grand Rapids, like we had today in SE Michigan.  I wrote about it on my blog just this afternoon.

Diane...when I got rid of mine (the pager that is)...well, let's put it this way, It was a very happy day!  The thing induced "twitching." :)

Vance, today was an extraordinarly beautiful day here in Grand Rapids.  Thanks for stopping by to visit this blog.  Achieving balance is not a destination for me...it's a process.

Lola...some people act as if that's the case.  We do need to build boundaries around ourselves.  As a father who has 2 daughters and 3 sons, it's important to draw these boundaries while their young.

Lola - That was well said.  I really can't understand why people expect so much from a real estate agent.  My favorite line is that real estate is not surgery so if I decide not to answer my phone while having dinner with my family I doublt anyone is going to die.

Many real estate agents have a helper personality, so it is difficult for them to realize when they are being asked to do too much.

Larry, we do lead by example, particularly within our families. When we are always available to our clients but don't invest time and attention with our families, we've sent an awful message.
Posted by Lola Audu~Audu Real Estate~Grand Rapids, MI Real Estate about 4 years ago
Jennifer, thanks.  It is so important to be honest with people about how we work and the other obligations we have in our lives.  Real Estate IS my life is one of the saddest commercials ever made in my opinion.
Posted by Lola Audu~Audu Real Estate~Grand Rapids, MI Real Estate about 4 years ago
Rosario...I think you're right. I have always thought that real estate was a profession which has a strongly addictive element to it...not unlike blogging I suppose. :)

Lola - Thanks for the wise words.  With experience comes the ability to set limits, but I think the expectations of instant information, and new challenges in the market have brought about increased demands on real estate professionals.
