Understanding How Your Unique Seasonal Cycle Can Improve Your Life & Business!

african irisCycles of change are a normal part of life.  Day transitions into night, summer transitions into fall and eventually winters' cold spell breaks up to reveal the freshness of spring.  While we accept these cycles as normal in nature, we sometimes ignore the fact that cycles are evident in all aspects of life.

As I look out my window and observe the snow cover, it's hard to imagine that underneath that frigid white blanket there is active life.  But there is.  It will not be evident for several months, but eventually, the ground will reveal what has been buried for it's own protection.

We can learn a lot from the way in which the earth adjust to its' different cycles.  The seasons merge gently into one another; each one revealing its' own unique qualities.  In fact, it's more than a little odd when winter tries to make an early appearance in fall or out stays its' welcome into spring.  When this happens, it's almost as though the earth is a little out of sorts with itself.

I have become more aware of the fact that in some ways, our personal and professional cycles operate in way similar to the seasons of life. There are periods when things seem dormant and almost at a standstill. On a personal basis, this may manifest as a period of limited energy or a more introspective period. It is not unusual for many people to misunderstand this and to become depressed or listless instead of allowing the natural rhythmic cycle to operate so they can revitalize.  This is nature's way of restoring and replenishing for periods of heightened activity.

As we begin to pay attention to these cycles, we will discover that they are remarkably consistent personally and professionally. When I started my real estate career almost thirteen years ago, I fretted when I was not busy.  I didn't understand that there is a natural cycle and rythm for everything. I didn't see that less busy times were opportunities to invest time in my own education or to improve my systems so I could serve my clients more effectively. Nor did I know how to discover the optimum cycle was for my personal or professional life.  Consequently, I was prone to becoming overwhelmed because I  was afraid to relax.

Well, over the years, I've learned that learning to relax is as important as working hard.  Balance is the key to a successful life.  I've also learned to explore my seasonal work cycle.  For me, it is important to have one day a week which I do absolutely nothing which is related to real estate including blogging. I also plan regular periods for study and professional growth.  If you take the time to learn your personal seasonal cycle which determines  how you function best, you will be better able to plan for vacation, rest and relaxation.  The pay-off will be better health, more efficiency and as a result more enjoyment of your time and money.

Good for you.  I'll put you on my "Least Likely to Burn Out" list.

Is the Eckhart Tolle book wonderful?  I'm thinking about getting it.

Hi Karen, I'm not sure which Elkhart Tolle book you were referring to, but I have read a couple of his books and find his insights revealing.

Lola - Godd advice to find some balance.  Blending work with play can be envigorating, too.  I always try to add a bit of time before attending out of state conferences.  Just a bit of time to see a local sight or two, or maybe connect with a fellow REALTOR® or just take some time to think.

Lola: What a thoughtful post.  Just this past week I was talking to an associate and for the first time heard my self say "I have a hard time with this time of year...I have difficulty focusing." and he said, "so don't, go with it and have some fun....then you'll be ready for the spring!" So, off I go today to have "fun" with my husband instead of fretting I have no clients today.

Perhaps that is His plan.  To change the seasons in order to keep up focused.  I have found that, for me, it is much easier to just let the day dictate the outcome.  In my business I have historically done much better in the cold months while my associates are thriving in the warmer months.  That doesn't mean that either one of us are more 'in tune' but that we have been chosen to achieve in different cycles.

Lola, this a beautiful post and I so agree with your points. If we could all just "BE" in that rhythm of life....we would have less stress. Very important to remember to enjoy the journey.

Lola it is difficult for me to relax when I'm not busy, I will try to enjoy my downtime more.  Thanks for your thoughts.

Thanks for the inciteful and inspiring words. They come at the perfect time on a snowy Sunday.

Terrific post Lola - I have long noticed the relationship and symbols of earth cycles and seasons to my own. Nature has a lot to teach us - relaxing does have much merit - the earth wisely takes its time out under blankets of snow which melts watering the fallow ground, and the leaves, breaking down to nourish new growth.

Hi Lola - I included this post in this week's Week in Review.

I need to learn to get more in sync with my own rhythm and cycles - and to appreciate them as well.

Well, if like was always great, we wouldn't appreciate it. And in Christianity we know about mountains and valleys. Everyone thinks they want to be on the mountain top at all times, but if you think about it, they valleys are quiet and lush and peaceful, with fresh streams of water and you're protected by the surrounding mountains. Valleys are a time to rest. To get to the top of the mountain, you have to climb your way up =)

It can be very hard to relax and just enjoy the ride. But you are correct...it is so important!

Marlene, What a great idea!  Most of the time, I'm getting to the conference just as it's starting.  Planning an extra day to relax and see the city is an excellent suggestion.  Thanks.

Diana, Thanks for your comment.  Sometimes, our fear holds us as prisoners.  It's helpful to stop this negative momentum...and doing something fun or challenging can be a great way to do so.  Fretting about not having clients has never brought them anyway. :)  It's always been about hard work, follow-up and follow-through.

Thanks for adding additional perspective to the discussion Carol.  Each of us will have a unique cycle.  The key is discovering what it is and becoming comfortable in "going with the flow."

Thank you Jeanene, I appreciate your comment.  This is an issue I am continuing to work on in my own life.

Hi Carolyn, The sentiment you express is true for many of us...unfortunately.  The paradox is that relaxing and business are almost polar opposites.

Deborah...Your comment about breaking things down is really insightful.  Winter is a time in which things are being broken down to release the energy for growth later on.  Thank you.

Great insights Lisa!  Also, to add to your excellent comment...the air is thinner on the mountain top. Pretty uncomfortable to live there all the time...

Lola,

Man did I need to read this today! Thank you for a great post. I struggle with ups and downs of being on top and not so hot! I am finding now on those not so hot days to just take them for what they are and just ride them out. Everything is ok and time is time. Nothing to be upset about. I find it hard to just take a day for me, but when I do, I wonder why I thought it was so hard! Just taking the time to be thankful can make all the difference in the world.

Charlene, I'm thankful that this post was truly helpful to you.  It's good to hear that you are learning about your own unique system of balance.

Hi Lola! You have many good comments that I will have to come back and read another time. What a beautiful way to describe recycling of ourselves and our businesses so we have energy for the busy season. I love your recycle and RENEW ideas! I also remember a freak "out of season" snowstorm last May when you introduced me to this AWESOME forum!!! Bless you!

Lola -- You have so much insight for such a young woman!  I agree that the trick is to find balance!  It is incredible how long it took me to discover this simple truth.  I didn't realize I was out of balance until I decided to take yoga -- I found I was out of balance in many aspects - physically and spiritually -- now I have improved in both.  It is important to take time to breathe!

Mary, Thanks for stopping by to read and comment.  This principle has been so beneficial to me.  I too will never forget that freak snow storm...that was something else! :)  But, look at what came out of it in the lives of so many!
Posted by Lola Audu~Audu Real Estate~Grand Rapids, MI Real Estate over 2 years ago
Hi Joan, Thank you for your gracious comment.  Your statement about breathing is so true...Many of us go through life without fully enjoying most of it...in essence a form of forgetting to breathe deeply which impairs the quality of life tremendously.
