When Jockeying For Position Takes on Another Meaning...

The title of the Most Important Job I have ever had is: MOM.  It's a job that has delivered the most extraordinary moments in my life as well as some of the most challenging.  Many of you know that this year I have started making contributions to Mothers Fighting For Others, a blog which highlightes situations affecting disadvantaged children in Africa & Asia.  We also explores new and creative ways to Fight for the Rights of Others who do not always have a voice or presence to speak for themselves.  Here's a pre-view to my latest blog below.

I admit it...I have a tendency to be impatient. Although, I love the melody of John Mayers song, "Waiting for the World to Change," there is always something inside me that bucks against thecamel_jockey_ansarburney1.png message.

Deep down inside, I distrust the notion that the world will simply change while we wait or because we hope it will. My gut informs me that change occurs because we make it happen!

A couple of weeks ago, I was watching a 60 Minutes piece about the Gulf State, Dubai. Steve Kroft interviewed the nation's leader and traveled with him to a number of different areas of the country. During the broadcast, Kroft and the Sheik are watching a camel race. What intrigued me was that the jockeys were not human beings...they were robots!

Well, as Paul Harvey would famously say..."And now for the rest of the story." Apparently, the use of robotic jockeys for camels is a fairly new development in the sport of camel racing. In fact, these robotic jockeys are so highly developed that they are controlled by their handlers from jeeps racing around the track shouting instructions into special hand held devices. They also wear a special perfume which makes the camels think they're being cajoled by a real human being and not a machine. Amazing.

It's even more extraordinary when you consider that a mere 2-3 years ago, the jockeys were little human beings... children. Many of whom had been sold or abandoned to child slavery. Click to continue reading...

Lola - Whoa!  I must of missed that on 60 minutes, that's an interesting story.  I guess I shouldn't be surprised with the technology we have available but I guess it's better than to ..... following the rest of your post:-)

Lola- You have passion for your cause. For all the developing countries they may need intervention and education.

What bothers me is that the United Nations wants to control the rights of the parents to raise their children in all countries and that the US ambassador signed this statement as well. If it is brought before our President I hope whoever the pres is at the time does not sign it. This is handing over our parental rights to our government. Homeschooling is one of the possible rights that will be attacked and our homeschooling lobby is fighting hard against this. Our rights to raising our children in Christian homes will be under attack.

There is always two sides to every story and I believe strongly that liberty and freedom are far more important in the long run than any evil doers. We must at all costs defend our rights in this country to be parents and make decisions for our children.

Jason, it's amazing technology.  Very funny to watch actually.  Can you imagine camels racing around a track with guys in jeeps racing around them shouting into little boxes.  But unfortunately, this has been preceeded by a more sinster aspect of the sport.  Read on...

Hi Katerina, Thanks for your comment.  I understand the sentiment you express.  In fact, I homeschooled my own children for 4 years.  It turned out to be one of the best decisions we ever made.  But, sometimes in the fear of protecting our own personal liberties, we allow great evils to go unchecked.  I believe this is wrong.  The types of situations which are being described here and in so many parts of the world are so dreadful that to stand by while innocent children/people suffer...it's just not something that I can do in good conscience.

The camel racers must be wealthy individuals if they can afford that kind of advances technology. The gulf between the haves and have-nots in the Middle East is broader than it is here in the US.

Rosario, The gulf between the wealthy and those at the lowest rung of the ladder economically is widening in just about every country of the world including our own.  However, in parts of the world like Asia and Africa, there are no safety nets, so the situation is much more desperate.

Lola - that last sentence put chills in my spine! I had no idea that they used to use children as jockeys on camels - nor did I know that these children were sold! Our world is such a cruel place - it makes you wonder about mankind - I applaude you on your efforts!

Camels carry grown men around and are quite capable of doing that while running, but for the sake of speed it went to the children. In most places they still use children and do not have the money nor the technology for robots. Funny what people spend their time doing when they are struggling to survive and don't have food...........

Hi Bill & Barbara Jo...It is unfortunate.  That's why it is important to highlight these type of injustices and to track efforts to make things right.
