Are You A Virtuous Shopper...A Different Take On Compassion

I was introduced to this website by Amy Miller, a real estate agent with ReMax Sunquest here in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  She said she knew I would love it!  She was right.  TED is an inspired network of the spoken word.  Launched as a Free Site to the public in 2007, TED stands for Technology Entertainment, Design.  It's a place where you can experience the power of ideas by inspired thinkers and visionaries.

The video below is a talk by Daniel Goleman, the author of the book Emotional Intelligence.  Goleman's perspective of the story of the Good Samaritan is presented in a way that I'd never thought about.  At this time of the year when shopping is BIG, BIG, BIG...his thoughts about connecting knowledge in a way that informs our purchasing choices responsibly was very interesting and intriguing.  It's about 14 minutes long...but well worth watching.

Lola...I watched it and yes its long but I'm glad I did take the time to watch. Maybe if we all slow down a bit and really look around us we'll be more compassionate. Thank you for posting this and Happy Holidays to you.

Lola, I am starting to use 2 windows in AR. One so I can listen and one to keep commenting. This was great, I had heard the story too before. So important to STOP and do what is important and not walk on by. That was good, I'll listen to TED more often now.

Missy, the 2 window is a good solution particularly if the site is running slow or to watch something like this.  Great idea!  Glad you enjoyed it. :)

Wow, This was wonderful and so timely.  Reading some of the comments above I realized that this post is an example of the man in the subway...who would stop and take the time and give, not peripheral acknowledgement, or even split screen acknowledgement, but their full attention and perhaps allow it to impact their future actions.  I just joined the MFFO efforts and am so glad you are also involved and have already made a difference with one of your posts.  Rocky is a perfect example of this kind of compassion...we all know about the poverty and suffering but she is the first one to stop and do something about it.  I could go on and on but will stop and just wish you a wonderful holiday and tell you how much a respect you and look forward to getting to know you better in 2008.

Diane, Thank you so much for your heartfelt comment.  You understood the nature of this post.  And what is so powerful is that difference makers are often in the minority.  However, the power of ONE is never dimmed when the ONE is passionate and motivated.  I'm glad you joined MFFO.  There is tremendous power if we stop...long enough to focus our attention and compassion.  Blessings to you are an Awe-Filled Christmas Celebration & A Success-Filled New Year.

Lola, here is one of my favorite quotes:

"Never Doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
