I've recently finished reading "The Manual, A Warrior of Light" by Paul Coelho the author of the famous allegorical tale, The Alchemist. In this book, Coelho writes short inspirational essays which are at once delicious fare for the soul in their sheer breadth of beauty and perspective. I struggle to resist the urge to read it voraciously and also meditate slowly...allowing the wisdom to marinate within the core of my mind.
In one essay, Coelho makes the following statement:
"The Warrior knows that the most important words in all languages are the small words. Yes. Love. God. They are words that are easy enough to say and which fill vast empty spaces. There is, one word-another small word-that many people have great difficulty in saying:No."
I'm struck by how powerful each of these words is. And by how empty and barren our understanding and usage of the words often are. When I release the word Yes from my lips...what am I enabling the creation of? Will it be for good or evil.
Love, I'm discovering is not simply an action. It is a state of being. It's far more complicated than a feeling. It's also some of the most difficult work that I've ever done. How's that for paradox?
God...I'm tempted to leave that one alone. There are no descriptives appropriate. I also see more and more that another inversion of self...EGO is a shell which hides how small the truth of it's existence truly is.
And finally No. Learning to say No and accept the consequences has been huge. Most of the issues associated with No for me have been about fear and insecurity. But as Coelho rightly observes in this essay, never saying No is not about being generous, it's more about being absent from one's self.
Wrapped up in these small words, is a lifetime of Learning. These are core truth...slowly distilled over time.

Lola~ I just started reading the Alchemist, so I'm happy to know that you enjoyed Coehlo's other book.
I wrote a blog the week about how learning to say no made me a better wife and mother, and I agree, the consequences of sayng no can be huge.
Good morning Lola,
The Manual of the Warrior of Light is my favourite book of recent years. As I've written in an AR post, 'I've read it over and over until I've felt the words themselves burnt upon my soul'......Paulo has incredible wisdom and guidance that came along right when I most needed it.
The Zahir is an excellent book also, as are his others.
Jo
Lola - once again you have made my brain work overtime. Thank you.
This is one of the most thought provoking posts I have read of late. And also one of the most true. I will have to pick up a copy of the Manual of the Warrior of Light and keep it handy as a reference.
Thank you - again and again and again...
Great post Lola. The use of small words is powerful. I would only add the adivce that I give agents when they encounter a problem and ask me "What should I say". My response is "as little as possible".
I had an agent who persisted in giving me a line-by-line recount of conversations, on the phone, with agents who were not being helpful. The longer she talked, the more I cringed.
What would you have said Lenn??
Nothing. I would have faxed a message to her stating my clients position.
Folks wouldn't believe that, in matters of real estate contract, I am a woman of few words.
Lola, Single syllable words are the most powerful because they were our first words. They had to convey much because there just weren't that many words available to express ourselves.

Bill & Barbara Jo...Appreciate your stopping by to read & comment.
Kelly...learning what these words truly mean is a lifelong experience!
I hadn't even read this post and wrote one about Ego....goodness...some kind of wave length going on here. :)
Wasn't there a movie the Alchemist? Or am I thinking of Merlin. In any case...
EGO is a shell which hides how small the truth of it's existence truly is and the center of self is where we find the existence of truth. :)
Lola-Yes, some of the simplest words can indeed be the most powerful. I also agree that we learn throughout our lives......and some of the hardest lessons can be the most beneficial and lasting.
** Just curious....where did you go to school? I am amazed at how many words you use that I have no idea what they mean :) :) Now how's that for a comment on using "the small words" :) :)
Lola- Nice....and your degree, what were your fields of interest?
Oh and if I was to get my vocabulary from Books.....ummm I actually know most of the words in a Dean Koontz novel :) :)
They said to be determined....
Lola, here are a few more small words to live with, courtesy of Dale Carnigie

Thanks for sharing that powerful quote by Marianne Williamson...Your personal observations about listening are also appreciated Dena.
Words are so very powerful Lola. While I haven't read Coehlo's work, his titles have captured my attention profounbly from time to time - I know at some time I will read his work - everything in its time.
I did however attend a fascinating local theatre reading of the Alchemist, which left me wanting to read the book to savour it and leave time for some thought.
Love is truly a state of being - I believe, the naturally intended state not only of humanity but of the world. Modern science may be close to showing this as well as may other afore-thought esoterics!
